DESCARTES

DISCOURSE ON THE METHOD

INTRODUCTION

The full title of the work is Discourse on the method of rightly conducting one’s reason and seeking the truth in the sciences. It was Descartes’ first publication, in a volume (published in Holland in 1637) which also contained the Dioptrics, the Meteorology, and the Geometry. These other works were claimed to be practical examples of the use of his new method.

They were all written in French, and my translation is from Adam and Tannery, Volume VI, to which the page numbers in square brackets refer.
