For formal purposes my name is Mr. MacDonald Ross — but everybody calls me George.

Actually. this is a bit out of date. Here’s a more recent one:

As my name suggests, I am Scottish in origin, and you will have to make allowance for occasional Scottish Nationalist comments about the relative merits of Scottish and English approaches to philosophy, and to education in general. However, I was born and bred in London.

I studied Classics at school, which is why I have been able to translate texts directly from Latin and Greek.

I studied Moral Sciences at Cambridge University, and if you follow this module carefully, you will come to know why the Philosophy degree had this title.

I have been at Leeds for over a quarter of a century, and my main specialism is the history of 17th- and 18th-century philosophy, especially Leibniz and Hobbes. Most of my research output has been in the form of articles, but I have published a book on Leibniz. I intend to publish much of the material for this and related modules in the near future.

Some people find me a bit frightening at first, but in fact I’m very approachable and open to criticism. I particularly like to be told when I’m talking too much, or wandering off the point.

I spend a lot of my time working in my study at home. But I have a modem, and I regularly check my email. So the best way to contact me quickly is to send an email message, via GMRmail on the navigation bar. If you want to see me personally, I can easily arrange a date and time.
