As far as possible, you should give evidence of having mastered all the compulsory reading from Spinozas Ethics Part I.
Write an essay of about 1,000 words (± 10%), which must be wordprocessed and submitted in duplicate, on one of the following topics:
1. Is Spinozas identification of essence and definition an elementary logical mistake, or a deep metaphysical insight?
2.What grounds does Spinoza give for saying that God is extended substance? Does he succeed in showing that this enhances rather than detracts from his divine status?
3. What arguments does Spinoza give for the thesis that there is nothing contingent in the universe? Is he guilty of confusing physical and logical necessity?
